A true product of the American dream.

Harley Davidson was founded in 1903 and has since earned its place as an icon.

When it comes to motorcycles, few names evoke the same response that “Harley Davidson” does. There’s no other motorcycle out there that spells “bad to the bone” like a Harley does. But, how did this amazing motorcycle manufacturer come into existence?

William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson worked in a 10 x 15-foot shed to build the first production Harley-Davidson in 1903. It was a 116cc racing bike. In about a year’s time, Harley and Davidson had managed to create a reputation for themselves and had already managed to sell 3 motorcycles to the public.

Hailed for a style of customization that gave rise to the chopper motorcycle style, things went from strength to strength for Harley Davidson in as little as 17 years. By 1920 it was crowned the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, with its models purchased in 67 countries worldwide.

A Basic Timeline

By 1905, they were winning races and thanks to the newfound success, they grew by one employee.

By 1908, they managed to build a motorcycle exclusively for the Detroit Police and by 1912, they opened their first factory.

1914 saw Harley Davidson crossing another milestone as they officially entered the world of racing and through sheer dominance, the managed to earn their nickname as the “Wrecking Crew”.

In 1917, they were commissioned to build motorcycles for the military.

3 years later, they became the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. At the time, they managed to spread across the globe to 67 countries and establish a network of 2000 dealers.

Though the Second World War slowed down production in 1945, the company managed to get back on track in 1947.

This was also the same year they launched their line of signature leather jackets.

In the late 80s, Harley Davidson entered into a deal with Buell Motorcycles. They supplied the company with racing engines.

This particular affair with racing allowed Harley to design and build the VR1000, which was the first liquid cooled motorcycle from the brand.

Though it has lost it’s title as the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer to Japanese competitors, Harley still retains its position as America’s largest motorcycle manufacturer.

Harley continues to be cherished name in the annals of motorcycle history not only because of its image, but, also because their machines live up to that image.
For instance, the V-Twin engine from Harley is one of the best motorcycle engines to ever have been invented.

This engine was specifically developed for touring purposes. Though the V-Twin may not be the fastest, it is definitely very powerful when it comes down to sheer torque.

The primary benefit with high torque is that your ride isn’t dependent on frequent gear shifts. The average Harley can pull even at lower RPMs, which results in a comfortable ride and an excellent touring experience on the whole.

This is why Harley Davidsons are great for long road trips.

Similarly, Harley Davidson’s are heavy, which actually boosts stability. Come rain or shine, a Harley will stay planted on the road even at fairly high speeds.

Today Harley Davidson continues to produce heavyweight motorcycles, with riders and fans from around the world celebrating its 110th anniversary in 2013.
