History

Six bikers from Manchester and Stockport set up the You’ve Been Nabbed in April 1991. They did not accept the conventional idea that it was not possible for disabled individuals to ride motorcycles, quad cycle, sidecar outfits or trike’s. The first project was to find a method to specifically retrofit a motorcycle for a rider who suffered an amputation of the lower left leg post an accident. There was a fund raising party. It was advertised locally and the NABD was soon flooded with requests from a number of other disabled people so that they can rise bespoke adapted motorcycles.

The NABD soon attracted over 100 members. It assisted three disabled individuals to adapt their motorcycles. They can ride them independently. The organisation soon became world leader in motorcycling for people suffering from disabilities. The present NABD membership has exceeded 9,000 members in their own right.

Unlike a number of registered charities, the money donated to NABD is not spent on wages, expense accounts or plush office accommodation. The number of paid employees is only two- an assistant administrator and an office manager. Salaries of both are financed by NABD’s own direct fund-raising, like from You’ve Been Nabbed and a host of other events. All other people who work at the organization are unpaid volunteers. The NABD enjoys the confidence of DVLA, DSA, DfT, DSA and VOSA. The Highways Agency also hires the NABD consultancy. When it comes to financial grants, the NABD has a financial grants system which will help the customer to adapt to motorcycles.

The You’ve Been Nabbed’ event is open to all. There is no need to take membership of the NABD. Non-disabled riders can also take part. The new site is much better than the older site at Astle Park. Both sides are hard standing and there is no danger of the ground being churned up softened by the rain.
